"Celebrate America" in word and song with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square featuring Daisy Jackson. A special guest speaker is President Thomas S. Monson. Commemorating the 215th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. This event is Sponsored by Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Utah Chapter.

Free tickets can be obtained over the Internet or in person at the Conference Center Ticket Office. Tickets will be available beginning Tuesday, 20 August 2002 at 10:00 a.m. Ticket limit: four (4) per person. Children under eight (8) years of age are not admitted. No babies, please. Best dress is requested.

Those attending this event are advised that cameras, recording devices, backpacks, food, and beverages are not allowed in the Tabernacle. Those who attend are encouraged to park in designated parking areas only.

On the day of the event, the Tabernacle doors will open 60 minutes before the start of the event. The length of the performance is approximately 90 minutes.

• Concert with Mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade (Feb 9, 7:30 PM)
  features music of Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland and John Williams, plus an "American songbook" medley of George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin tunes. The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets and Salt Lake International Children's Choir will appear, and Williams will borrow the baton from Craig Jessop to conduct his own compositions.
• Concert with Clarinetist Richard Stoltzman (Feb 16, 7:30 PM)
  Barlow Bradford will conduct Stoltzman in Mozart's Clarinet Concerto and Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie, and the Orchestra at Temple Square will also perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. The Tabernacle Choir has a cameo, singing in Borodin's "Polovtsian Dances" and joining Stoltzman in a rendition of "Amazing Grace."
• Concert with with the King Singers (Feb 23, 7:30 PM)
  Mack Wilberg will conduct a program of jazz and world folk songs, and the International Children's Choir will appear.

• Concert with Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie (March 2, 7:30 PM)
  She will perform Joseph Schwantner's Concerto for Percussion and give the world premiere of Chen Yi's "Capriccio," which also will feature the choir and organist Richard Elliott. Craig Jessop will conduct.

The choir will travel with a novel electronic organ. Using 32 speakers, it produces a sound similar to the famous organ featured in the choir's weekly broadcasts from the historic Salt Lake Tabernacle.

• Friday, 19 January, 8:00 p.m. EST: Free public concert at George Mason University, in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall, Fairfax, Virginia. The choir will be joined by a 19-piece ensemble from the Orchestra at Temple Square. Because seating is limited, tickets are required. Tickets will be distributed through the 16 stakes of the Church in the Washington, D.C. area later this week. For anyone not affiliated with one of those church stakes, please call 202-662-7480.

  Saturday, January 20: The 320 choir members travel aboard a large float in the inauguration parade while singing Battle Hymn of the Republic, God Bless America and America the Beautiful.

  Other performances will include an invitation-only concert for the diplomatic corps present at the inauguration.

  Sunday, January 21, 2001, 9:00 AM EST: The choir's weekly broadcast will be recorded at George Mason University. The broadcast is open to the public at no charge, but tickets are required. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. and members of the audience must be seated by 8:30 a.m. Entrance to the broadcast will include an additional brief concert.

This year's "Tanner Gift of Music," an annual concert that took place Friday (November 3, 2000) in the Salt Lake Tabernacle, was filmed for a future PBS broadcast.

New Choir Director - 3 December, 1999:

Craig D. Jessop has been named by the First Presidency as music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, replacing Jerold D. Ottley who retired on December 3. "As music director, Brother Jessop will lead the musical ministry of the world-renowned choir. Together with his associate directors, Mack Wilberg and Barlow Bradford, he will also be responsible for the Temple Square Chorale, the training choir for the Tabernacle Choir, and the recently organized Orchestra at Temple Square. Brother Jessop had been serving as an associate director of the Tabernacle Choir since 1995."

The Choir wil be presenting a special concert in conjunction with the "Mormon Miracle Pageant" and the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Manti, Utah. The concert will take place at 7pm on Friday, June 18th and will be held on the Manti Temple Hill prior to the pageant performance that evening.

New Appointments and Policies effective 1 May, 1999:

Robert C. Bowden, musical director of the Mormon Youth Chorus and Symphony for more than 25 years, is retiring this summer. These groups will perform a traditional Easter concert on 16-17 April and a final concert on 21-22 May.

Mack Wilberg, professor of music at Brigham Young University has been appointed an associate director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, with responsibility for the Temple Square Chorale. This new chorus, which replaces the Mormon Youth Chorus, will become a training choir for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Barlow Bradford, director of orchestras at the University of Utah has been appointed an associate director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, with responsibility for the Orchestra at Temple Square, This organization, which replaces the Mormon Youth Symphony, will now accept qualified musicians without regard to age.

Wendell Smoot, the current Mormon Tabernacle Choir President, has also been appointed president of the Temple Square Chorale and the Orchestra at Temple Square. He will be assisted by a full-time administrator.

The minimum age to audition for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will be lowered from 30 to 25.

The 2-hour program includes an interview with composer James DeMars; the 1995 national premiere performance in the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City with soloists Andrey Luna, soprano; Linda Childs, mezzo; Robert Breault, tenor and Simon Estes, bass-baritone, with the 300 singers of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and a symphony orchestra conducted by the composer; an interview with Dr. Jerold Ottley, director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
